Giveaway management software

Increases in yield, decreases in giveaway and an industry-leading mass balance are the things that make every food manufacturer more profitable. That’s why they are also three areas of daily concern for the food manufacturing industry. And when multiplied across multiple production lines and products despatched daily, the losses that are attributed to poor yield or excessive giveaway inevitably has an impact on the sustainability on a food processor and the wider industry.

With the direct impact on food manufacturing profit margins, making even the smallest of changes within the food factory can have a dramatic impact on daily and annual profitability. Even the slightest gains in this area can immediately have a positive effect on your bottom line.

The problem with fixed weight products

As many food manufacturing businesses think that it’s too difficult to control product giveaway, they focus on those areas that are easier to manage. For instance; production cost savings, better use of ingredients and improved throughput or quality.

But for food processors that deal with fixed weight products, knowing how to minimise giveaway can be game changing.

However, when excessive giveaway and poor yields occur during the food manufacturing process,and when those results are reviewed retrospectively (often the next day), it’s already too late to make improvements.

By integrating all manufacturing processes using real-time shop floor data capture, our reporting monitors yield, giveaway and mass balance, and is proven to deliver improvements to the bottom line.

For instance, by capturing data at all key operations within cut and packaging processes, not only have we been able to measure and recognise the reasons for food giveaway levels, but we’ve enabled our customers to understand the potential payback on the investment in our work.

By combining and analysing yield and giveaway data insights, we’ve shown our customers how to:

  • Compare yield specifications for each product:
  • Uncover true variances:
  • Reduce waste and maximise profit margins.
  • Through continuous performance monitoring (by measuring outcomes against previous processes), determine in real-time the giveaway savings that have been achieved.

Our reports quickly revealed the significant ways in which they could reduce giveaway. For one customer, this discovery proved to be the catalyst for strategic investment in more advanced cutting equipment.

Using SI’s data-led approach, focused on giveaway reductions, further efficiency and productivity gains, one of our cheese sector customers demonstrated payback on its investment in the SI solution in year 1.

For one of SI’s customers, our product giveaway analysis revealed that a 1% reduction in giveaway on 1 million kilos of cheese at £5/kilo delivered a saving of £50,000.
